Geneva Holmes was born to Mary Lou Holmes and the late Mr. Peter Robertson on April 11, 1946. She was later raised by the late Mr. Ed L. Varnedoe along with 6 sisters and 2 brothers. Geneva attended Liberty County High School and graduated in 1964. Soon after she met Mr. George Simmons and they married on June 20,1966 and from that union came two children: Karen and Gregory.

Geneva worked as a daycare teacher for many years. She enjoyed teaching the children, feeding their little minds with knowledge, all while creating a safe and stimulating environment for their learning needs. Geneva also enjoyed cooking and taking care of her garden and was so proud to show off all the vegetables and fruits she grew.

Geneva was also a 2-time Breast Cancer Survivor who handled it with strength, courage and positivity. She also loved attending the church she went to as a young girl (Wilderness Missionary Baptist Church) and served as a member of the Usher Board for many years.

On June 15, 2025, the angels in heaven called Geneva to her heavenly home. She leaves to mourn her profound presence, her husband of 59 years Mr. George Simmons, along with Karen V. Simmons (daughter), Gregory Simmons (son), Shalaine Simmons (granddaughter) who she helped raised, Ariyanna J. Simmons (granddaughter), and her world, pride and joy Aubrie O. Ellis (great granddaughter).

She is also survived by seven sisters Mary Jane (James) Moorer, Roszina (Larry) Ransom, Linda (Silton) Jones, Kathy (Larry) Flowers, Earthalene Holmes, Denise and Deloris; two brothers Micheal and Maurice. She also has two sisters-in- law: Hattie M. Mathis and Mary Walthour; two aunts: Shirley Robertson and Leona Gadson and one uncle: E.J. Robertson.

She was predeceased by her parents Mary Lou Varnedoe and Peter Robertson and Ed L. Varnedoe (stepfather); 5 brothers: Ervin Holmes, Edward Milo Varnedoe, Jimmie, Nathan, and Bobby (Robertson) and one sister: Meschelle Diane Johnson.

Geneva will be missed by her nieces, nephews, sisters, cousins and friends. As a family, we are saddened by her passing, but she will always be remembered as a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and the best grandmother and great grandmother a child could ever hope to have. She will live in our hearts forever.
