Our dear mother and friend, Genevieve Dee Corbitt (Hatfield), was taken suddenly from us at the age of 84. We were blessed by her kindness, generosity and love, and are grieving deeply at her loss. Born in southern Ohio on a farm to Dorothy and Dwight Hatfield, "Peewee" as she was nicknamed by her grandpa Frank, had many chores. Heating by coal required many trips to fill buckets and bring into the house. There was no indoor plumbing and her two sisters weren't happy when in the middle of the night a trip needed to be made to the outhouse. Before electricity was run to the house in 1947, oil lamps were used after dark for homework. Her childhood led to her "scrappy", can do attitude and work ethic. Peewee was a great athlete. She was a cheerleader, drum major and track star for all four years of high school. Her senior year (1955) she was crowned the Homecoming Queen. Married to her high school sweetheart, Lloyd West, they moved to Columbus, and had two children; Wayne and Jayne.
The last 35 years of her life was spent owning and operating an herb supplement business; growing it from the ground up with her husband Tom Corbitt. Residing mostly in Florida, 15 years ago they moved the business to Columbus to be closer to family. Dee, as she was known to friends later in life, cared greatly for those around her and for the clients they served; often being generous to a fault with her resources.
Genevieve Dee Corbitt was preceded in death by her parents Dorothy and Dwight Hatfield, oldest sister Dolores Jean Toth (Hatfield), and her husband Tom Corbitt. She is survived by her sister Virginia L. Belson (Hatfield) and brother William D. Hatfield, son Wayne F. West (Jennifer) and daughter D. Jayne West-McLinn (Kirk), grandsons Joshua C. West (Kerry) and Kurtis W. West (Courtney), three great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her dearly, others who thought of her as family and a mother, and her precious Yorkie Spike.
Service and internment arrangements are being made for the summer of 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to The Canine Collective located at 11144 US Highway 42 N, Plain City, OH 43064.
