GENEVIEVE M. STRATTON, 101, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at the home of her daughter in Alvin, Texas.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Oakdale Evangelical Free Church in Meriden, Iowa. Pastor Tyler Stauffer will officiate. Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery at rural Meriden, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 from 5-7:00 p.m. at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Services will be livestreamed on the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church website. Online condolences can be left at www.boothbyfuneral.com
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church Memorial fund in Genevieve's honor.
Genevieve was born on February 27, 1922 to Harry and Esther (Hultman) Lundell on a farm North of Larrabee, Iowa. She attended Meriden Schools, graduating in 1940. After graduation, she went to Rockford, Illinois to attend nursing training at the Swedish American Hospital. After graduating in 1942, she returned to Cherokee and began her nursing career at the Sioux Valley Hospital.
On January 1, 1945, she married Harvey Stratton and together they had five children, Terry, Julie, David, Layne, and Kyle. After their marriage, Genevieve and Harvey moved to San Diego, California, where she continued her nursing career until Harvey was discharged from the United States Navy. The couple returned to Cherokee in 1947 and Genevieve returned to nursing at the Sioux Valley Hospital. In 1965, she became the Director of the LVN program in Cherokee as part of Western Iowa Technical School. She remained director of the program until her retirement in 1985.
Genevieve was a member of the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church in Meriden, Iowa and enjoyed many wonderful times with her friends and relatives. After retirement, she spent her summers growing and tending to her red geraniums and flowers around the house, keeping her bird feeders full, and watching the hummingbirds. She spent her winters in Texas with her children, crocheting, quilting, and making many blankets, quilts and hand towels for the family and others.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harvey in 1999, her brothers, Kenneth, Vernon, and Robert Lundell, sister-in-law, Waldene Lundell, and daughters-in-law Paula Stratton and Phyllis Stratton.
She is survived by her children, Terry (Gaylynn) Stratton of Conroe, Texas, Julie (Greg) Mahin of Alvin, Texas, Dave (Deborah) Stratton of Alvin, Texas, Layne (Barb) Stratton of Alvin, Texas and Kyle Stratton of Alvin, Texas; grandchildren, Robert Mahin, Jason Mahin, Lorena (Chris) Griggs, Abbey (Daniel) Phillips, Jill (Carle) Upshaw; Andrew (Kaysie) Stratton; 9 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; sister-in-law, Penny Lundell; also many more nieces and nephews.
