Genolia Elizabeth Hatney Dunton, affectionately known as Jenny, passed away peacefully at her residence in Onancock, Virginia, on May 27, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on November 9, 1945, in Melfa, Virginia, Jenny was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her loving father, Raymond Hatney, her caring mother, Emma M. Sturgis, and her cherished brother, Alfred Sturgis.
Jenny's early life was rooted in the community of Melfa, where she attended Accomack County Public Schools and graduated from Mary N. Smith High School. Her education laid a strong foundation for her work ethic and dedication to her community. Jenny spent many years working at the Shirt Factory in Exmore, Virginia, where she was known for her meticulous attention to detail and her friendly demeanor. In her later years, she provided housekeeping services, always taking pride in her work and forming lasting bonds with those she helped.
A woman of faith, Jenny was a long-standing member of St. Paul AME Church in Pungoteague, Virginia, under the leadership of Rev. Stephanie M. C. Webber. Her spiritual life was a cornerstone of her existence, providing her with strength and comfort throughout her journey.
Jenny's interests and hobbies brought joy not only to her but also to her friends and family. She was an avid television watcher, a master at playing Spades, and an enthusiast of puzzles and games. Her love for dancing was infectious, and she could often be found swaying to the music with a bright smile on her face.
Jenny's legacy is one of love, laughter, and service. Her presence was a gift to those around her, and her memory will be cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. As we say goodbye to Genolia Elizabeth Hatney Dunton, we celebrate a life well-lived and a spirit that will continue to inspire us forever.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories: her loving sisters, Margaret Hatney, Shirley Sturgis, and Beverly Sturgis; special friends, Patricia Burrell, Connie Williams, and Denise Godwin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
