Dr. George Abdel-Sayed, 92.
Bloomfield Hills, MI
September 24, 2025
After a long and fulfilling life, Dr. George Abdel-Sayed passed away peacefully in his home on the evening of September 24, 2025. His loving family was at his side.
Born on January 28, 1933 in Luxor, Egypt, George was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, teacher, mentor, friend, and much more to so many. He embodied the best of qualities: unwavering faith, strong work ethic, a brilliant mind and unconditional love for his family. George was a loving husband to Mimi, whom he married in Lafayette, Indiana in 1967; they recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. George was an exemplary father to their two daughters, Mary and Mona. But perhaps he took no greater joy than in his role of grandfather; he cherished and adored being "Gido" to Amanda, Monica, Alysse and Alex, loving them greater than imaginable.
Dr. George Abdel-Sayed was a graduate of the University of Cairo with B.S. and M.S. of Civil Engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany. Dr. Abdel-Sayed served as a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Upon his retirement, he was honored as a Professor Emeritus for his many contributions to the university. He had the high distinction of being elected a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering,
During his distinguished career, Dr. Abdel-Sayed authored several books and published articles. He was integral in the design and development of several important building and bridge projects around the globe, including in Egypt, Germany, Canada, Iraq and all across the United States of America. Dr. Abdel-Sayed's immeasurable impact reaches further through the doctoral students he advised and mentored who contribute significantly in the field of Civil Engineering across the world.
George was a voracious reader, particularly on the topics of religion, faith, politics and philosophy. He enjoyed international travel, both in the course of his work, and even more so after retirement with Mimi. But his most special moments were with his family and friends. He grew up within the Coptic Orthodox faith in Egypt.
George is survived by his wife, Mimi; daughters, Mary (Michael) Lee and Mona (Todd) Armstrong; grandchildren, Amanda Lee, Monica Lee, Alysse Armstrong and Alex Armstrong. Although George is gone from this life, he will live in our hearts forever.
