George Bachmann Jr. Obituary
Born in 1930 and at the age of 94, George Theodore Bachmann Jr. passed away in the early morning of Memorial Day, May 27th, 2024 at his home in
Westminster, Maryland. George was the son of George Sr and grandson of Max originally from Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Germany and son of Anna Carter, from a farming family on the South River in Annapolis. George served in the Army during the Korean War but since he spoke French was sent to France where he was a lieutenant and supply clerk (what he called a 'cakewalk' service).
Back in the U.S., George graduated from the University of Maryland-College Park and Catholic University and took a degree in library science. He worked as a librarian at Anne Arundel County Library, Catonsville Community College, United Lutheran Seminary and eventually retired in the early 1990s after over twenty years at Hoover Library with Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College).
As George Sr and Max Bachmann, as well as his Uncle Arthur Bachmann were members of the Naval Academy Band and Marine Band respectively, music was always a big part of George's life growing up. He was a founding member of the Viola da Gamba Society of America and for years hosted a Thursday night music consortium at his house in Westminster (with Eleanor and Keith Richwine, Carol Quinn, Leroy Panek and others). While he started with a focus on baroque and other early music, later in life he grew interested in Old Time folks music and loved to travel to the Augusta Heritage Festival in
Elkins, West Virginia to play the fiddle with his favorite teacher Dave Bing. He also attended Common Grounds on the Hill in Westminster. For over 40 years, he composed many pieces of music in these varied traditions for viols, violins, recorder, flute, piano, harp and more. These include a waltz for each of the female members of the family and a wedding march played at both his own wedding and the wedding of his son Austin and daughter-in-law Elaine Bachmann.
George was predeceased by his wife Marjorie Adele Bachmann who died in 2008 and his sister Shirley Bachmann and was the last to pass on of all his close boyhood friends from Annapolis, MD (known collectively as the Gas House Gang). George is survived by his two sons, Austin and Eric Bachmann; two daughters, Anna Bachmann and Thea Law; niece Dawn Gilliam; nephew Jay Simmons, and four grandchildren, Ian and Maddy Law and Max and Gus Bachmann. George's children plan to have a small service for the immediate family at Deep Creek Lake in the fall near the location where George and Marjorie spent their honeymoon. One of George's largely un-musical children will attempt to play some of their father's compositions.
