Obituary for Deacon George E. Byrd, Sr.

Deacon George E. Byrd, Sr., 87, of Plainfield, New Jersey, entered eternal rest on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at JFK Hospital in Edison, New Jersey.

George was born on November 11, 1938, in Swainsboro, Georgia, where he attended high school before relocating to New Jersey in 1958. He first settled in Newark, later making his home in Plainfield, where he resided for more than five decades.

A dedicated and hardworking man, George spent his career as a professional truck driver. He worked for Allied Steel and later for Linden Motor Freight, where he remained for 32 years until his retirement. He also took pride in working as an owner-operator, a role that reflected his independence, reliability, and strong work ethic.

George's life was deeply rooted in faith. He was a devoted member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Roselle, New Jersey, where he served faithfully as a Trustee and Deacon for many years. His service was marked by humility, consistency, and a quiet strength that touched all who knew him.

In his personal life, George found joy in citizens band radio, traveling, and most of all, spending time with his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, whose guidance and presence will be deeply missed.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty J. Byrd, in 2003, as well as by all of his siblings.

George is survived by his children: George Byrd, Jr.; Marlyin Franklin (William); Angie Gamble (Mack); and Sharronda Walker (Billy). He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Tyisha Lundy, George Byrd III, Lance Byrd, Daniel Miller (Quiana), Javohn Byrd; Danielle Franklin, Daleketa Franklin, and Derrell Franklin; Raheen Byrd, Darren Hester (Tanielle), and Nadia Barnett (Tyran); and Carlos Stevens, Ciara Stevens, and Celeste Stevens. He is further survived by numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, whose lives stand as a lasting testament to his legacy. In addition, he leaves behind his cherished goddaughter, Felicia Turner, along with a host of extended family members and dear friends

Family and friends will gather to celebrate George's life and legacy of faith, love, and service. He will be laid to rest with entombment at Somerset Hills Memorial Park.

Rest now, dear servant of God. Your work is complete, your faith fulfilled, and your love endures forever.

Deacon Byrd was always kind and welcoming when I was by the house. Always a kind word, a gesture and he would certainly offer me food when he was cooking. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. To know him was to love him. My deepest condolences to George and the family. You are in my prayers.
