George Calvert Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Inc. - Morehead on Nov. 22, 2023.
On November 20, 2023, as he was dreaming of flying with the birds, George Wilford Calvert, Sr. passed peacefully into Glory.
George recently celebrated his 100th birthday. He was born on October 7, 1923, to Charles Frederick and Mary Estelle Sorrell Calvert in Farmers, Kentucky. Preceding him in death were his parents and his four siblings: Charles William, John Edward, Chester "Chetty" Harold, and Kathleen Evans. Also preceding him were his grandson Kalvert Crager and his great grandson Spencer Calvert.
George married Lucille "Lou" Hamilton on June 20, 1944; it was a 79-year romance. The couple raised six children: Mary Lou (Barry Forman, deceased) of Morehead, KY; Ellen Sue (Jack Hickey) of Leon, WV; George, Jr. (Teresa) of Dunkirk, IN; Kathy Lee (Randal Johnson, deceased) of New Concord, OH; Karen Jane (Richard Webb) of London, KY; and Kimberly Lynn (Kyle Crager) of Georgetown, KY. George was Poppy to 23 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren, as well as a multitude of other family members and friends who mourn his passing.
George attended Farmers Grade School, Morehead High School, and after serving as an Army Corporal gunner/navigator with the Cannon Company 21st Infantry 24th Division in the Philippines and Japan, WWII, majored in horticulture at Morehead Vocational School while he worked in the family apple orchard. Following a few moves to other states the family settled in Farmers, their hometown. They bought their little store, Calvert's Grocery, and established Pioneer Orchard, both beloved by the community. After retirement George and Lou moved to London, Kentucky.
George's interests included reading everything from cereal boxes to the classics; gardening, beekeeping, and building aviaries for purple martins (which he enjoyed watching); music (he had a beautiful voice and played the harmonica); doing projects with his children and grandchildren on the farm and in the orchard; and telling stories to anyone who would listen. He was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel on May 7, 2002, for his many years of community service through the Morehead Lions Club.
The Calvert family would like to thank Village Heights Assisted Living in London; the University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital emergency department, medicine team led by Dr. Adam Gray; UK nursing and medical school students, nurses, techs, chaplains, and other support staff; and Bluegrass Care Navigators Hospice, all for their loving, compassionate care and many friendships. They would also like to remind everyone to hold their parents, grandparents, and other loved ones close; document their lives and stories however you can - one day it will mean the world to you.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals (400 Fraley Drive) in Morehead, KY and officiated by close family friend Reverend Drew McNeill. Private family visitation will begin at noon with public visitation and funeral services following at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. Burial will follow at Brown Cemetery in Morehead; full military honors will be presented by Morehead American Legion Post 126. Pallbearers are: James David Forman, Dani Antrim-Lindloff, George W. Calvert III, Frederick Calvert Sposa, Andrea Fryman Stone, and Kwyncee Kay Crager.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Village Heights Assisted Living or Bluegrass Care Navigators Hospice.
