Former Grocer and Restauranter
WATERBURY – With great sadness the family of George T. Carrah announce his peaceful passing on Monday July 15, 2024 at St. Mary’s Hospital, three days after his 90th birthday.
George was born in Waterbury, CT on July 12, 1934, son of the late Bahia (Hayek) Carrah, and Taffic Carrah. He was a self- employed entrepreneur, starting at the age of 19 when he and his brother Ray opened Carrah’s Market grocery store on Highland Ave. in Waterbury, which they ran for over 30 years. After the sale of the grocery store, George purchased the Country Gate Restaurant in Middlebury which he transformed into one of the finer dining establishments in the area. Following that, George became the co- proprietor of the Continental Room in Naugatuck with his business partner Carol Piel. Throughout his career and at these various establishments, George developed a reputation for honesty, humility and charity. He was loved by his customers and employees alike. George was a faithful and devoted Catholic. He dutifully served as an usher at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury for over 20 years. He was a kind and generous person who always saw the good in people. George enjoyed spending time with family and friends at social gatherings, trips to the casino, and being a part of the weekly coffee club at McDonald’s. He thoroughly enjoyed this simple gathering, especially when he was able to share it with his sister Evelyn and brother Joe. May his memory be a blessing to all.
George is survived by his nieces; Diane DeFranzo, Barbara Carrah, Susan Carserino, and Patricia O’Loughlin and his nephews; Joseph Carrah, Michael Carrah and James Carrah, along with many great and grand nieces and nephews, and his sister- in-law Sadie Carrah. George was predeceased by his brothers; Joseph Carrah and his wife Joan, Raymond Carrah, as well as his sister, Evelyn Carrah.
