On Saturday, November 5, 2022, George Edward Coffey, loving father of four children, passed away at age 87.
In Detroit, he attended Redford High School and graduated in 1953. After graduation, he entered military service and completed basic training with the 65th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Division. He became a green beret and was assigned to the 77th Special Forces Group Airborne. In December of 1955, he received an honorable discharge from the military and decided to further his education. He was a collegiate brother with Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Business Administration.
On June 20, 1958, he married Jean Anne Robertson and they remained together for 51 years before she passed away on September 22, 2009. Together they raised three sons, Allen, Robert, and Jack, and one daughter, Karen.
In Austin, George was the owner of George Coffey Lincoln-Mercury, Southfork Hyundai, and Onion Creek Volkswagen. He was active in the Austin community and was a proud member of the Longhorn Foundation, Austin Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary Club of Austin for many years. He was also an active member at Barton Creek Country Club, Onion Creek Country Club, and Horseshoe Bay Country Club.
George had a passion for golf and travel. He played golf all over the U.S. and in many foreign countries. Many weekends were spent with his sons, Allen and Jack, playing a round of golf. He loved to travel to see as much of the world as he could. His frequent travel destinations included Germany, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. George was known for his quick wit, gentle smile, and his funny sense of humor. One of George's proudest accomplishments was when he decided to take The Walk to Emmaus and become a Stephen Minister.
George was preceded in death by his father, Earl, and his mother, Mildred (Meyer) Coffey. His sister Margery (Coffey) McGuigan, and her husband, Jack. He is survived by his four children: Allen Coffey, his wife Sylvia (Grant), Robert Coffey, Jack Coffey, his wife Catherine (Jenkins), and Karen (Coffey) Prendergast, her husband Robbie, as well as 7 grandchildren, two nephews, and one niece. He was well loved and will be deeply missed.
