George Emanuel Cunningham III, 70, of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on November 28, 1954 to the late George Emanuel Cunningham II and Phyllis Jean Longo Cunningham.
A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, George proudly served as a field radio operator during the Vietnam War. He graduated from West Virginia State College with a BA in Business. George was a valued employee of Sodexo for over 30 years, relocating his family to South Carolina in 2000 to become the Director of Environmental Services.
He was a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus and joined St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church upon moving to Spartanburg. George was also a drummer who loved playing and listening to music. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Giants and the New York Yankees. His family was always his highest priority and his hard-working nature ensured he was always able to provide for and care for them.
George is survived by his children, Cheryl Anne Merriotte (William Merriotte), Ryan Alexander Francis Cunningham (Kelly Marie Newell), and Emily Elise Cunningham (Nicholas Simmons); grandchildren, William “Bryson” Merriotte, Mason Merriotte, Liam Merriotte, Lucas Merriotte, and Gwen Elise Cunningham; partner, Brenda Lipscomb; the mother of his children, Elise Ann Zimmer; and his last surviving aunt, Theresa Jane McDevitt. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Gerald Cunningham, and sister, Cheryl Anne Cunningham.
Family and friends are invited to attend George’s viewing on Thursday, October 2, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 8401 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby, PA 19082. A Funeral Mass will follow on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 10:30 am, at Saint Laurence Church, 8245 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby Township, PA 19082. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon PA.
