George Farlekas Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 29, 2025.
George Michael Farlekas passed away on August 28, 2025 in Princeton, NJ. George was predeceased by his wife of 51 years Elizabeth (Betty) Farlekas, his brother (James Farlekas), and sisters (Barbara Farlekas and Evon Farlekas), his daughter-in-law (Roxanne Farlekas), and his nephew (Peter Keeler). George is also predeceased by his parents Mary (Drapania) and Michael Farlekas.

George leaves behind Pat Cornett, his companion for nine years, as well as his four children, Noradeen (Don Morrison), Denise (Gary Fornia), Michael (Regina), and Peter (Tara Redmond). "Poppa George" is also survived by eight beloved grandchildren, Olivia, Alexandra, Isabella, Gabrielle, Mia, Sophia, Peter, and Jack. "Uncle George" also leaves behind a niece and two nephews, Lori Serven, John Salvato, and Michael Salvato. He valued the friends he made during his residency at Brandywine Living in Princeton, NJ.

Born on May 31, 1936, in the Bronx, NY, George was the youngest of four children born to immigrant parents. His parents, Mary and Michael Farlekas, were entrepreneurs who owned and managed two family-run florist shops in the Bronx, one of which was below the family's home on Westchester Avenue. George met his wife, Betty (Salvato), at James Monroe High School and subsequently attended and graduated from Hunter College in 1958. George and Betty moved to Happy Valley, where George attended Pennsylvania State University, graduating with a Master of Science in Geology in 1961. George was a Geologist from the Bronx and was a proud career federal employee who lived a life of service through his employment with the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

George enjoyed the game of basketball and was a formidable player in both high school and college. According to an article in the 1956 New York Times, George was a "Monroe (basketball) star" and a member of "Hunter's varsity quintet." George loved his family, the Yankees, movies - especially Marjorie Morningstar, hot chocolate, salmon, cheesecake, the Knicks, and strawberry ice cream.

George's family is grateful to all of his loyal and loving caregivers. In addition, they would like to thank his doctors, nurses, and the staff at Brandywine Living for their collective kindness and care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in George's honor to the Elizabeth Farlekas Memorial Scholarship at the University of Scranton. The family will hold a private remembrance of George.
