George Fitsalos

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Fitsalos, age 100.

George fell asleep in the Lord on 12/03/2025. He was the beloved husband of the late Georgia Fitsalos, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. Loving father to Chris Fitsalos and Nick (Soula) Fitsalos. Proud grandfather to George and Christina Fitsalos. Devoted son of the late Nikolas (Christina) Fitsalos. Dear brother to the late Ioannis (Maria) Fitsalos, the late Kanella (Pantelis) Koriou, the late Maria (Andreas) Lappas, and the late Vasiliki (Pavlos) Bregiannis, and fond uncle to many nieces and nephews in the United States, Canada and Greece.

George was an incredibly loving, caring, and selfless father, grandfather, husband, uncle, and brother who cherished his family-especially his children and grandchildren. His charm, wit, and humble nature left a lasting impression on all who knew him. A distinguished Greek Civil War veteran of the 1940s, George went on to become the owner of a coffee shop/store in his village of Romiri, next to the Papalambro store (of the famous greek folk song "Papalambrena").

At age 44, he packed up his family and moved to the United States in pursuit of a better life-with only $700 to his name. An exceptional gardener, George took great joy in tending to his garden and sharing his fruits and vegetables with every visitor. He will be remembered for his incredible health and vitality, which he maintained until the very hours before his passing. A shot of ouzo, a baby aspirin, his komboloi, and daily walks sustained him for a century.

He leaves behind a legacy of devotion, generosity, and love that will be deeply missed by his family and many friends in the United States, Greece, Australia, and Canada.

Visitation 11:30AM-12:00PM on Monday, December 8th, 2025 at Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 2350 E Dempster Street, Des Plaines, followed by the funeral service at 12:00PM. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery, River Grove.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations for Georgia may be made to Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church.
