George Franey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Moreland Funeral Home - Westerville on Jun. 17, 2025.
George William Franey, age 72, of Columbus, passed away peacefully at home on June 13, 2025. A lifelong public servant, George-known to many as "Bill"-was the retired Police Chief of Mifflin Township and former Commander of the Eastland Police Academy.
Chief Franey became a certified police officer on his 21st birthday, beginning his career with the Powell Police Department. He went on to serve with the Blendon Township, Sharon Township, and Genoa Township Police Departments, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. He also served as a K9 handler and Sergeant with the Perry Township Police Department.
In 1986, he was appointed Police Chief of Mifflin Township, a role he held until his retirement in 2005. In addition, he served as Commander of the Eastland Police Academy beginning in 1998. Even after retirement, Chief Franey maintained his commission and worked as a private investigator for the State of Ohio. From 2015 to 2017, he also served part-time with the Minerva Park Police Department.
In total, Chief Franey spent 45 years in law enforcement. Throughout his career, he was known as a leader and mentor who led by example-never asking others to do something he wouldn't do himself. His impact on the law enforcement community was profound, helping shape the careers of countless officers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George F. and Norma A. Franey; brothers, John and Joseph Franey; and stepdaughter, Selena Miller.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 30 years, Bonnie Miller, and his son, Gregory (Holly) Franey, who proudly followed in his father's footsteps-being sworn in by Chief Franey as a certified officer on his own 21st birthday. He also leaves behind grandchildren Hillary (Nick) Harr and Devin (Nicole) Shinshock; great-granddaughter Gianna Shinshock; and many extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.
Memorial services will be held at Moreland Funeral Home on Schrock Road in Westerville. Visitation will take place on Monday, June 23, 2025, from 2–4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m., with an FOP service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at 1 p.m., followed by burial at Blendon Central Cemetery in Westerville.

Dear Bonnie and Family
We were deeply saddened to learn of George´s passing. Although it has been some time since we last connected, we have been reflecting on the many positive memories we hold of him-with deep respect and gratitude.

George possessed a rare warmth, a generous spirit, and a wonderful sense of humor. He had an innate ability to make those around him feel seen, heard, and truly appreciated-qualities that left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

His memory will always hold a special place in our hearts, and we know his presence will be deeply missed by many.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences. Our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

With deepest sympathy,
Jeff and Michelle Carran
