LOWVILLE - George G. Getman, age 75, passed away March 19th, 2024, at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse surrounded by his loving family after suffering a brief illness.
George was born in Watertown, New York on July 26, 1948, the second child of Donald C. and Mavis LaFlair Getman. He graduated from Lowville Academy in June 1966. After graduation, he attended a school for heavy equipment operation in South Carolina working a few construction jobs after. On June 6, 1970, he married the love of his life, Theresa A. Dicob at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lowville. They remained in Lowville for 53 years raising their three beautiful children.
George worked as a makeready for Climax Manufacturing Company in Lowville, New York for 45 years, retiring in July of 2012. While working for Climax, he was drafted into the United States Army in April 1968 serving two years. During that time, he was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana and Fort Riley, Kansas. After retiring from Climax, he was often seen at many of his grandchildren's sporting events, seldom missing a game. He spent countless hours with his son and grandchildren on Lake Ontario fishing for salmon and deer hunting in the fall. He loved playing golf at Cedars Golf Course and snowmobiling on the Tug Hill. His sense of humor, practical jokes and love for ice cream will be missed by all of his family.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Theresa, and their three children: George (Karen) Getman of Newark, Ohio, Daniel (Tracie) Getman of New Bremen and Denise (Christopher) Brennan of Lowville; his 8 grandchildren, Katie, Alex, Kierstin, Eric, Cade, Corey, Landon and Rielly; his brother, Donald (Valerie) Getman of New Bremen; nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be missed by all of his fur babies including his beloved cat, Skeeter. He is predeceased by his father, Donald Getman, his mother, Mavis Szalkowski, his stepfather, Joseph Szalkowski, and his brother Paul.
Per George's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral. Burial will be in the Lowville Rural Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of George G. Getman to Lewis County Humane Society, P.O. Box 682, Lowville, NY 13367 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O.
