George Partridge Greenhalgh III

George Partridge Greenhalgh III died January 18, 2024 at his home on Shan Hill Farm, Boyce, Virginia, surrounded by family. George was born July 30, 1946 in Winchester, Virginia, the son of Sybilla "Billie" Burwell Jacobs and George Partridge Greenhalgh, Jr.
George attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia and the University of Virginia, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Geography. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and played on the varsity polo team. At the University, George completed Army ROTC and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He branched as an artillery officer and was the third generation Greenhalgh to serve the U. S. Army in this capacity. He was honorably discharged in 1972.
George worked for Diversified Educational Systems, selling laboratory and educational training systems for vocational schools, colleges and universities. Subsequently, he constructed and operated the Fairfield Farm Market as an outlet for the hydroponic tomatoes and lettuce he grew in partnership with his father-in-law. George was an active partner in Clarke County Supply, a Gilpin-Greenhalgh family fuel oil enterprise and extension of the earlier farm supply partnership between the families. In the mid-1980s, George started his career in real estate with Thomas & Talbot of Middleburg, and he later joined his wife who had started Greenhalgh Real Estate. His career lasted over 30 years. In 1998, George took over running his family farm.
Born into an avid equestrian family, George foxhunted with his mother, Master of the Blue Ridge Hunt, where he served as a hunt whip. Early on, he developed a love for the sport of polo which continued beyond his university years and took him to numerous tournaments, fortifying treasured, lifelong friendships. George passed his passion for polo on to his wife and daughters. He found great joy in watching his daughters play interscholastic polo and intercollegiate polo for his alma mater.
A fond account was of a trip as a groom to Argentina where George spent three months working for polo professional Ray Harrington (9 goals), who played as the substitute on Seymour "Norty" Knox's American team in The Cup of The Americas. As a groom, George traveled by cargo plane with the horses. This trip held a special place in George's heart.
U.S. Army Field Artillery School was interrupted by the finals of an important polo tournament. Commanding officers were none too sympathetic to this new officer's prior polo commitment, and only by intervention of a General did George succeed in making it to the tournament. His return to duty was met sternly and with George's full name inked deeply into the commanding officer's desk pad.
George served as Treasurer on the Board of Trustees for Burwell Cemetery and was a Board Member for Virginia Polo. He was a lifelong member of the Middleburg Polo Club.
George is survived by his loving wife, Robin, his four children whom he held very dear: Langdon Greenhalgh (Natalie), Blakeley Greenhalgh (Jennifer), Sybil Price (Thomas), and Marjorie "Meg" Pryde (Kyle), and six grandchildren – Cooper, Sienna, Virginia, George, Marjorie and Robie.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 17, 2024 at Christ Church, Millwood, Virginia, with a reception to follow at the Millwood Country Club, 340 Country Club Lane, Boyce Virgina 22620.
