George Joseph Hallow, 96, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 3, 2025, at his home.
Jello, as he was lovingly known, was born on January 14, 1929 in Goldsboro to the late Joseph and Magdalene Kannan Hallow. He attended St. Mary Catholic School for nine years followed by Goldsboro High School. Jello was a natural athlete and starred in football, basketball and baseball throughout his high school career. He was a captain in all three sports and received college scholarships from UNC, State College, and Duke. Jello bypassed college to play professional baseball in the Red Sox organization for 10 years. All those hours of playing kick the can as a kid paid off. Jello was inducted into the Goldsboro High School Hall of Fame in 1991.
After baseball, Jello moved back to Goldsboro and started a restoration company, Professional Home Cleaners, which still thrives today. Jello was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church where he served as an usher and Building Chairman. He helped start the soccer and basketball sports program at St. Mary School.
Jello was a man of Service. He was a member of the Goldsboro Jaycees, winning Jaycee of the year three times, and a proud member of the Goldsboro Host Lions Club for over fifty years. He served as president several times, won Lion of the Year four times, and received the Jack Stapley and Melvin Jones Fellowship Awards, the highest achievement for a Lion.
Jello had a loving nature and a wonderful sense of humor. He was a colorful storyteller, a die-hard Tarheel fan, a pool shark, an avid golfer, and a great dancer. He never missed seeing The Glen Miller Band with his wife Judy, sister Snag and friends and was often the last one on the dance floor.
Jello's real passion was golf. When he was not coaching Sheryl or Jeff in their sports, he enjoyed being on the links sharing shots and laughter with his friends. He had an amazing short game and amassed nine holes in one, two of those during the week of his 80th birthday. He was especially gifted at giving unsolicited golf lessons and advice.
Jello is survived by his wife, Judy Jeffery Hallow; daughter, Sheryl Hallow; son Jeff Hallow; grandson Jack Hallow and special nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Hallow Rice, Agnes Hallow Kannan; Josephine Hallow Barns; brothers, Joseph Hallow, Jr. and Louis Hallow, and daughter Patricia Hallow Woods.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. in the sanctuary of St. Mary Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Wayne Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Jello's memory to: St. Mary Catholic Church or the Goldsboro Host Lion's Club.
Services are entrusted to Seymour Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
