George C Hamblet III 8/8/1940 - 10/1/2024
George passed away on October 1, 2024 after a brief illness.
George was born in Portland Maine, on August 8, 1940 to the late Virginia and George C
Hamblet Jr. He went to Portland schools until his family moved to Gray and he graduated from
Pennell High School. He spent his childhood in the family cottage on Little Sebago Lake in
Gray, enjoying his time with his cousins and his close friends who were all like brothers. His
favorite pastime was driving around in the kit boat that he built with his father. He knew every
inch of the lake and would often tell the stories of the history of the lake. George still lived in the
family home until he passed away.
As a young man, he worked at Gray Garage and then drove a truck for Scott Rand, delivering
eggs. He met his future wife Sylvia Small at Cole Farms, and promised his friends that he would
marry her one day. They married on October 21,1961 and started a family. His proudest
moments in life were owning his home, the love of his wife, and the birth of his children. He
later worked for Merrill Transport, Texaco Oil, and retired from Amoco Oil. He was proud of his
career as he drove a trailer truck over a million miles and was accident free. George was a
volunteer for the Gray Fire Department for many years and enjoyed the public service and
comradery. He loved fly fishing at Rock Pond, making projects out of wood, trips to Cancun with
Deb and Dan Hamblet, trips to Canada to visit relatives, and many trips to Florida. He was
passionate about the Yankees and he shared this enthusiasm with his sons.
George is survived by his children, Terrance Hamblet (Kristen), Lisa Skilling (Kenneth), Craig
Hamblet, Chris Hamblet all of Gray. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Branden and
Jeremy Skilling, and Andrew Litrocapes, and also leaves behind his dog Quincy. He is
predeceased by his loving wife, Sylvia in 2019, and his sister Carol Adler and brother Robert
Hamblet.
A Celebration of Life will be held on October 20, 2024 at Spring Meadows in Gray from 2 to 5
PM.
