George S. Harris

West Carthage- George S. Harris, 76, 40 N. Broad St., died peacefully on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Upstate Hospital in Syracuse, with his loving wife at his side.

He was born on August 12, 1948, in Watertown, NY to the late Everette & Leta (Curtis) Harris. He attended Copenhagen High School and graduated from South Jefferson High School in 1969.

He married Carol Sheehan on February 7, 1970, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Copenhagen. He was employed for twenty-three years as a machinist at Carthage Machine. George and his wife owned and operated the Hotel Davenport Restaurant & Bar in Copenhagen for 15 years before their retirement.

He is survived by his wife, of 55 years, Carol Harris, along with his son, William “Bill” Harris, Rome; a daughter, Susan (Jacob) West, Wisconsin; his two grandchildren, Kylan & Elora West; along with his siblings, Leon (Viola) Harris, Everette (Gabriella) Harris. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was a past member of the Copenhagen Volunteer Fire Department and Lewis County Fire Police and is a current member of South Rutland Valley Grange and the North County Draft Horse Club.

George is predeceased by his parents, his siblings, Everette at birth, Carl Harris, John Harris and Enid Dobbins.

Visitation will be held at the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, on Thursday, March 27, 2025, from 1:00 pm-3:00 pm with a funeral service following at 3:00 pm in the Chapel of the Funeral Home, with the Rev. Canon Samuel P. Lundy, officiating. The spring burial will be announced at a later date and be held in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Copenhagen, NY.
