George E. Harvell, Jr., age 76, of Buford, GA, passed away on Monday, September 8, 2025, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivon Estelle Welch and George E. Harvell, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jane Casper Harvell, daughter Maggie James (Brian), and son Matt Harvell (Heather); grandchildren, Grant James, Grace James, Garrison James, Kathleen Harvell, and Sydney Harvell, all of Buford, GA; brother and sister-in-law, John and Linda Harvell of Mobile, AL; sisters-in-law & brothers-in-law, Sharon & John Christoferson of Belvidere, IL; Doug & Nancy Casper, Keith & Ronda Casper, both of LaCrosse, WI; special cousins, Arthur E. "Bubba" Bosarge, Jr., Karen Crocker Lee, Allen Crocker, Freddy Crocker, Greg Harvell and Dr. Jeff Harvell; special cousins-in-law, Sally & Rudy Wuest; special nieces & nephews, Steve Casper, Jr., Stephanie Dryman, Anne King, Mike Christoferson, Carrie Casper, Nathan Casper, Joe Casper, Todd Casper, Kurtis Casper, Tony Casper, Jamie Ideker, Lindsey Geary and Shelley Aspensen. "Butch" was proud to tell people he was from was from L.A., Lower Alabama. He was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama and always pulled for his beloved University of Alabama Crimson Tide. As a computer engineer with IBM, he spent his professional career in Illinois and transferred to Atlanta in the mid-eighties where he & Jane raised their family and called the south home for more than forty years. "Pops George," as he was affectionately known, instilled the values of hard work, respect, leadership and family in his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was a family person who was present for his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was best known for being a living, walking, talking encyclopedia with a brain full of knowledge and astounding recall. He was a steady encourager who provided support, fostered confidence, brought about hope and nudged people to be better. Growing up on the Mobile Bay and Gulf Coast, he took his love of water, boating & fishing to the shores of Lake Lanier and Lake Hartwell. He & Jane loved to travel to visit family and saw many sights across the United States. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. A private memorial service will take place at a later date.
