It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of George Donald Higgs Sr., a beloved husband, father, and friend, who departed this world on June 13, 2025, in Bryan, Texas. Born in New Hebron, Mississippi, on September 14, 1941, to Lester and Jessie (Sutton) Higgs, George's journey through life was marked by service, devotion, and a generous spirit that touched all who knew him.
George proudly served as a police officer in Vicksburg, Mississippi, for five years and was a dedicated member of the Mississippi National Guard in his younger years. His professional life was richly spent with Ensco Drilling Company, where he worked as a tool pusher in the North Sea, earning respect and admiration from colleagues and friends alike.
For over fifty years, George was a devoted Mason, exemplifying the values of brotherhood and charity through his longstanding membership at the Centerville Masonic Lodge. He was also a faithful member of LIFEChurch, formerly Leona Baptist Church, where he was honored to serve as a deacon starting in March 2008.
Since 2000, George and his beloved wife, Mary Harper Higgs, have made Leona their home, having moved from Conroe, Texas. Together, they nurtured a bond that spanned nearly sixty-one years, creating a legacy of love and togetherness. Their children carry forward the values instilled in them by their remarkable father.
George was a man of many passions; he reveled in the excitement of football, treasured moments spent watching classic John Wayne films, and found joy in the Lonesome Dove series. Renowned for his delicious fried fish, George turned this culinary delight into a cherished Christmas tradition, uniting family and friends around the table.
George's spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched, as we celebrate his life and the warmth he brought to us all.
George was preceded in death by both of his parents. He is survived by devoted wife, Mary Higgs of Leona; children, George Higgs Jr. of Conroe, Tom "Les" Higgs (Jamie) of the Dallas area, and Stefanie "Alana" Higgs of Leona; grandchildren, Dakota and Makayla Higgs of the Dallas area; sister, Carolyn Rogers of New Hebron, Mississippi; nieces, Melissa Hagen and Dana Rogers; nephew, Eddie "Bubba" Rogers Jr.; and numerous extended family and special friends.
A funeral service will be held to honor George's memory on June 18, 2025, at 10 A.M. at Walters Funeral Home. Pastor of LIFEChurch, Mark Gray, will officiate the service. A visitation will take place on June 17, 2025, from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M., also in the chapel. Following the service, George will be laid to rest in Leona, Texas.
In the days to come, let us gather to reminisce, to find solace in shared memories, and to celebrate the incredible legacy of George Donald Higgs-a life defined by love, service, and an unwavering commitment to those he held dear.
