George Holzkopf Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 15, 2025.
George Holzkopf, age 98, born on December 18, 1926, passed away peacefully and entered the presence of the Lord on December 30, 2024. George was born in Chicago, Illinois, but then later he and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Minnesota in 1972. The majority of his career was spent working for the Chicago Tribune and then the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He did however also own a dry cleaning store at one time and also went back to school and worked for a short time as a dental technician. In his earlier years he served proudly in both the Merchant Marines and the Army.
Some of George's hobbies were fishing, taking the grandkids camping (and fishing), wood carving, and watching the Chicago Bears play football. He spent many summers with his wife, kids, and grandkids up at Sunset Point Resort, a favorite summer destination for everyone. Family was very important to him, and he loved the gatherings for birthdays, anniversaries, and holiday celebrations. Even when he got older and it was harder for him to get out, he made every effort to be at every family event he possibly could. George was an avid animal lover and not only did he love his many dogs over the years, but also took care of the wildlife to make sure they got fed. Even in his nineties, he could be seen filling up the bird feeders in his yard and making sure the deer had corn.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Harriet Holzkopf, his brother Richard, his sister Shirley, and his grandson Joey. He is survived by Dorothy, his loving wife of 77 1/2 years, his three children Sharon (and husband Roger), Sue (and husband David), and Ken (and wife Julie). He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He touched many lives and we all will treasure the memories he left us with. He will be dearly missed by all. Private service.
"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints." Psalm 116:15
