The Obituary
"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7)
George Terry Huff, Jr. quietly slept away into eternal rest on the early morning of Monday, April 8, 2024. He was born to the late George Terry Huff, Sr., and to the late Betty Ruth Berryman Huff on July 16, 1949, in Sanford, N.C. His father called his son, "Tiger." Terry was reared in Lee County and attended W.B. Wicker High School. While in school, Terry became a big jokester, bringing fun to any social setting. His experiences at W.B. Wicker nurtured Terry to become a rising basketball player, which allowed him to excel on the collegiate level.
Terry was brought up to believe in God and in the power of Jesus Christ. He joined Greater Zion Holy Temple, United Holy Church of America, Incorporated, where he dedicated his life to worship, even though circumstances and travel may have associated him with other churches. Later, Terry became a member of Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church, Bear Creek, NC, where he sang in the men's choir and worked with the kitchen committee. In Durham, NC, he worshipped at Antioch Baptist Church and sang with the male chorus. Terry carried his faith throughout his tenure at North Carolina Central University.
Mr. Huff, Jr., received his bachelor's degree in Sociology/Psychology from North Carolina Central. Terry went on to receive a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Social Work. He took pride in being a lifelong learner, honing his skills through participation in workshops, symposiums, and lyceums.
Terry became the Director of the medical unit of Dorothea Dix Hospital. His duties took him across North Carolina inspecting state-run mental facilities. During his tenure as director, he became concerned with the lack of education of young men. His experience in teaching and coaching basketball on the college level began at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford. His concern for others provided an opportunity for Terry to work at Durham Technical Community College in the Social Science Department. This venture led to his employment with North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in the Behavioral Science Department. He then became the coordinator of the EndZone Initiative and the lead coordinator and instructor of the Dimensions of Learning/Freshman Seminar. While employed at NCCU, he earned a master's degree in family and consumer science.
He was a member of the Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc., a board member of NCCU's Campus Christian Ministry, and a member of the Christian Provisional Ministries.
The following select group will cherish precious memories of Terry: his devoted wife, Teressa, one son, Travis Huff of Raleigh, NC; one daughter, Cheryl McNeely of Durham, NC; one sister, Phyllis of Sanford, NC; and one uncle, Minister Joseph Cornelius Berryman; a special niece, Chelley Davis; Grandchildren: LinQuan Jones, Robert McNeely, Alexis Huff, Claire-Jamison McNeely, and one great-grandchild, Aairyn Jones. He also leaves two sisters-in-laws, Naomi Totten, and Dr. Marion Holloway (Dr. Enoch Holloway); one brother-in-law, Andrew Taylor; special cousins; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

I am sorry to hear of George's passing. We attended NCCU during the same time and I was well aware of his basketball skills. Years after we had graduated I would run into him as he travelled across the state. Both of us worked for the state on North Carolina. Condolences to family.
