George Ackley Kaut, at the age of 90 having run with endurance the race set before him, leaned gently across the finish line early Sunday morning, February 1st, looking to Jesus Christ the founder and perfecter of his faith (Hebrews 12, v. 1-2). A graduate of Portsmouth High School (Scioto County, OH) and a Bobcat alumnus with a degree in mechanical engineering from Ohio University, George began his career with the Goodyear Atomic Corporation (Waverly, OH) before taking a position in facilities engineering with the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Akron, OH. He enjoyed a long and productive career in Akron, extending to his service with Goodyear Aerospace and the corporate transitions with Loral Systems Group and finally Lockheed Martin. George retired with 42 years of continuous service as an engineer.

It was to Akron that he brought his “one and only”, wife of 57 years Marilyn Elaine (Montgomery) in the early 1960s, to whom he was first introduced by future brother-in-law Daniel Gilbert after playing a baseball game in Portsmouth. That would prove to be “the catch of his life ” for the southpaw first baseman.

Married in 1961, George and Marilyn begin their life of faith, family, friendship and service in the Ellet community of Akron and were long time members of the Tallmadge First Church of God. George actively served the Lord in many ways throughout his nearly 55 years in the congregation, approaching any work to which he was called (trustee, morning worship leader) with kindness, a sense of humor, steadfast focus, organization, and excellence. In his later years he thoroughly enjoyed caring for the church grounds, and carefully ensuring the American flag received proper treatment and display. As a former Army reservist (honorably discharged) George revered the history of our country, deeply respectful of the military and the devotion and sacrifice offered by our nation’s service men and women.

George was a man of many interests, including years of devotion to road running and earning various age-group awards. An accomplished chess player he shared his love of the game with anyone who might sit for a while “over the board”. He became an expert in family genealogy through many years of research tracing the Kaut and Montgomery family lines; beyond genealogy, his enthusiasm for history extended broadly to many topics, including World War II, ancient Egypt and most notably a deep and comprehensive interest in the Civil War. Indeed, George enjoyed intellectual pursuits and had a keen interest in the science of life. But without question, when asked to name his favorite book, he stated unequivocally, “The Bible”.

Emerging through a life of commitment, service, and devotion, George and Marilyn deeply loved their grandchildren. Indeed, George and Marilyn were an ever-present and steadfast influence in their lives. Attending myriad athletic events and school activities over many years, George and Marilyn were devoted supporters and consistent admirers of the accomplishments and work of their grandchildren. The impact of George and Marilyn will forever be woven into the fabric and futures of the Kaut family children. Their grandparents leave to them an enduring legacy.

Preceded in death by his beautiful wife Marilyn, parents George and Margaret, and brother Dave, George leaves behind sons Kevin (Pidge) and Steven (Maryann) and grandchildren Joshua, Caleb, Kylie, Jacob, and Mason . And of course, the only other ‘lady in his life’, Daisy his beloved “kitty kitty”, carries on her own legacy of “purr-poseful” treat consumption and furry compassion.

The Reverend James W. Bradley, former pastor at Tallmadge First Church of God and lifelong friend, captured George perfectly and succinctly in a recent sentiment, “An ‘influencer’ has completed the mission for which he came. Quietly, thoroughly and always with attention to detail George Kaut humbly lived among us.”

Our sincere thanks to the staff in the memory care facility at Danbury of Tallmadge for their love and care for Dad during his two-year residence there. Your kindness, devotion, and attention to Dad’s social, emotional, and physical care is deeply appreciated. And to the nursing staff of CorsoCare Hospice, your gentle, directive, and loving support of George made his life better in his time of need.

A memorial for George and Marilyn Kaut will be set for a time in the weeks ahead in the local church to which they devoted their time and energy – the Tallmadge First Church of God, Tallmadge, OH. Details will be made available to family and friends in the coming days.
