George Elwood Matthews, 87, of White Hall, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2025. He was born on Christmas Day, 1937, in Philadelphia, Mississippi, to the late Major T. Matthews and Luva Dee Cumberland Matthews.
George was a man who loved the outdoors and found joy in life's simple pleasures. He spent many cherished days fishing, hunting, and creating crafts- hobbies that reflected both his patience and his creativity. A devoted believer in Jesus Christ, George carried his faith boldly and sincerely throughout his life. He worked for 43 years in the railroad industry, serving with both the Illinois Central and the Cotton Belt Railroad, before retiring after a long and dedicated career.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Willie Jean Thorton and Ganell Parker of Mississippi.
George is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, June Anderson Matthews; his children, Randy Matthews and wife Cheryl of Little Rock, and Carla Brinkley and husband Randy of White Hall; his grandsons, Jonathan Matthews (Courtney), Scott Matthews (Anna), Brad Matthews (Kayla), and Mason Brinkley (Rainey); and six great-grandchildren-Tucker, Kayla, Emma, Jake, Leela, and Lily Matthews-each of whom brought joy and pride to his life.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 24, 2025, at Memorial Park Cemetery, with Brother Steve Monk officiating. A memorial visitation will follow that evening from 5:00–7:00 p.m. at Robinson Fuller White Hall Funeral Chapel.
George will be remembered for his kindness, his devotion to family, his steadfast faith, and the quiet strength he carried throughout his life. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
