LAKE PROVIDENCE, LA - Funeral services for George Michael "Mike" McKenzie will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at First Methodist Church in Lake Providence, Louisiana.
Reverends Henry Stone and Bo Horne will officiate.
Services are under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Lake Providence.
A time of visitation will be held from 2 to 3 PM on Sunday, April 13, 2025 at First Methodist Church in Lake Providence.
Mike passed into eternal life on Friday, April 11, 2025 at West Carroll Memorial Hospital in Oak Grove, Louisiana.
Mike went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 11, 2025. Mike was born on July 5, 1952at Terral Clinic to Anne and Bo McKenzie. He graduated in the first graduating class of Briarfield Academy in 1970. He was married to the love of his life, Susie Essex for 55 years. After a short stent in Ruston and Shreveport, they settled in Lake Providence to raise their family. Upon his return to Lake Providence, Mike began working at Bo's Grocery with his father, Bo and brother, John. He remained in the grocery business until the close of the store in 1988. He then took a leap of faith and began a long career in the agricultural chemical business where he worked as the warehouse manager for Helena Chemical. After 30+ years with Helena, he retired in 2019.
Mike was a lifelong member of the First Methodist Church where he served as usher. He later took over the task of changing the weekly message on the church sign after the passing of one of his closest friends, Bobby Holt. He was an avid golfer who loved golf trips with his golfing buddies. He was a staple most every Saturday and Sunday at Lake Providence Country Club where he also served on the Board overseeing the golf course for several years. Other than spending time on the golf course, he loved his evening boat rides with Susie.
Above all, he cherished time with his family. Whether he was on the lake pulling them on the tube, watching sporting events, or in an auditorium watching them dance, he was always the supportive Big Daddy. Mike never realized the lives that he touched and his family is so thankful for the thoughts and prayers of those who loved him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Shelby "Bo" McKenzie and Elizabeth Anne (Hull) McKenzie.
Mike is survived by his wife, Susie McKenzie of Lake Providence, Louisiana; daughter and son-in-law, Monica McKenzie Toson and Jack Tolson II of Opelousas, Louisiana; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Michael McKenzie and Virginia Sherrer McKenzie of Lake Providence; 6 grandchildren: McKenzie Whipp (Jake); Jack Tolson III; Mary Catherine Tolson; Thomas Batton (Drew); Davis Batton (Regan); Malin Batton; and Ally Anne McKenzie; 2 great grandchildren: Lainey Batton and Parker Batton; brother, John S.
