A much-beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, George Molina Mitchell passed away on the morning of August 6, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 75 after a struggle with lung cancer. He was a resident of Moriarty, New Mexico. He was born on October 29, 1949, in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, to an American father, George Augustus Mitchell, and a Mexican mother, Maria Dolores Mitchell. He grew up in neighboring Douglas, Arizona, with his three sisters, Alicia, Amelia, and Lorraine. He graduated from Douglas High School in 1969.
George was passionate about sports and athletics, and he was a football and basketball player at Douglas High School. He was a huge fan and admirer of the Arizona State University’s athletic program and the Boston Celtics. He also loved classic rock music and wasn’t afraid of talking about religion or politics. He had brief US military service before a short stint working in Chicago, Illinois. Afterwards, he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he met his wife of nearly 27 years, Karen Mitchell (married 1980 & divorced 2007), and with her had five sons: George Jason, Patricio, Bobby-David, Joshua, and Jeremiah-Paul. He worked nearly four decades as a registered nurse in neuroscience at UNM Hospital, starting from the very bottom and working his way up to head nurse, and had retired in 2015. He moved to Moriarty, New Mexico in 2007, and took care of his aging mother who lived to the grand age of 94 (1925-2020). He leaves behind his three sisters and his five sons, who had blessed him with twelve grandchildren.
He will have a memorial service at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 215 Girard Ave. Moriarty, New Mexico 87035 on Friday, August 22, 2025 with a viewing at 9 a.m., a rosary at 10 a.m., a mass at 11 a.m., and burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery at 12 p.m. with a reception at 12:30 p.m. back at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Hall. If you’d like to send flowers, please send them to Harris-Hanlon Mortuary, 807 Central Ave. Moriarty, NM 87035 on August 21 or before. George was resilient, courageous, and deeply loved. He was able to spend his final days at his granddaughter’s house in Albuquerque with his family and loved ones.
