George Robert Nelson, 88, of Westfield, IN passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. He was born May 21, 1936, in Brooklyn, NY to George Nelson and Marie Smith Nelson Jensen.
As a 1954 graduate of Brooklyn Tech High School, George continued his education at Cooper Union College, graduating in 1958.
For several years, George worked at RCA records and later Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.
His memberships included Carmel Golden K Kiwanis, Carmel Masonic Lodge #42, and the Norwegian Club. George received the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash award.
George and Joanne first met at a dance. She was in Rainbow Girls; he was a DeMolay. They fell in love and married on June 21, 1958. Before moving to Carmel, they lived in West Caldwell, NJ.
George enjoyed playing handball and was a stamp collector
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Joanne Johnston Nelson; son, Eric Nelson; brother, William Nelson; and son-in-law, Jonathan Hill.
Survivors include his daughters, Lori Hill and Lelia (Dave) George; son, Howard (Laura) Nelson; grandchildren, Michelle Hill (David Ward), Andrea (Troy) Wilson, Michael (Hannah) Wyatt, David George, Haley (Austin) Hartwick, Stacey (Jared) Renner, Brittney George, Lindsey George, Brendon Nelson and Ryan (Dienes) Nelson; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather at 12 noon on Friday, May 2, 2025, in King of Glory Lutheran Church, 2201 E 106th Street, Carmel, IN 46032, where George was a member, and where the Funeral Service will begin at 1 pm.
A Committal Service will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250.
Contributions in memory of George, may go to the donor's favorite charity.
