George Nielsen Obituary
Age 89, passed away early Thursday morning, September 14, 2023. George was born in Wadsworth, OH, on May 17, 1934, the son of Marius and Jimmie (Shelor) Nielsen. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University, George earned a Ph.D in mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1963, he joined the faculty of Kalamazoo College. While George was teaching mathematics for thirty-six years, he also served as the foreign student advisor for twenty years. He retired in 1999.

I took 3 classes with Dr Nielsen. Calc I and II and Stats. I learned all that I ever needed or wanted to know. He was a true Educator. Probably my favorite Kzoo Professor.

I have great memories of Professor Nielsen teaching probability and statistics in the mid-late 1980s. He always took a patient, methodical approach in walking through the theoretical concepts. He discussed how the concepts could be usefully applied out in the "real world," whether that was in commerce, the sciences, sports, etc. A great educator - he will be missed.
