George D. O'Brien, age 86, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2022 at UPMC Hanover. He was the loving and devoted husband of Marta P. (Fay) O'Brien who passed away in 2002; together they shared 43 years of marriage.
George was born in New York, NY on November 15, 1935 and was the son of the late George H. and Elizabeth H. (Thompson) O'Brien. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He worked as a police officer with Metropolitan Police Department's Canine Unit and later as a Secret Service Agent where he served on Embassy Row and retired under Vice President Walter F. Mondale's detail in 1978. George was a history buff and loved everything Irish. He had quick wit with a mischievous smile. It was said by many that he had the "Gift of Blarney." He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Catholic War Veterans, and the International Police Association. George was also a parishioner of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Hanover.
George is survived by his daughter Anna Sanders and husband Charles; his grandchild Alyssa Bollinger and husband Jacob; and his great-grandchild Oliver. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Joyce O'Brien; niece Patricia Olson; and nephews Kevin O'Brien and Michael O'Brien. George was preceded in death by his son Martin O'Brien who passed away in 2015; his brothers Roger O'Brien and John O'Brien; and his nephew Daniel O'Brien.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend George's Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, April 25, 2022 at 10:00AM at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 220 Third St., Hanover with Rev. Michael P. Reid II as celebrant. A viewing will be held on Sunday, April 24, 2022 from 2:00PM – 4:00PM at Murphy-Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown. Interment will be private.
