George Psyhogios Obituary
George V. Psyhogios, age 93, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family, Thursday morning, October 23, 2025. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dionysia; parents, Vassilios and Sophia Psyhogios; brothers, Ioannis and Dimitrios Psyhogios; and sister, Efthemia Iliopoulos. George was born in Akra Tegeas, Greece, on February 10, 1932. He immigrated to the United States in 1951 at the young age of 19 in search of the American dream. Through hard work, perseverance, and a generous spirit, George built a life rooted in faith, family, and service to others. George never forgot his roots in his beloved homeland of Greece. He continued to support his family in Greece, while bringing the wonderful Grecian culture, traditions, and food to central Ohio. In 1962, George met and married the love of his life, Dionysia Bouzounis. Together they shared 60 wonderful years and raised three children. His family grew as his children married and gave him five beloved grandchildren. As a Papou, he adored his grandchildren and along with Yiayia spent countless hours with them. Nothing made him smile more than when one (or more) of them bounced into the house, even in his final days. He also played a key role in helping many other family members immigrate to the United States, continuing his lifelong commitment to helping others achieve a better life.
George devoted his career to the restaurant industry, where his warm hospitality touched countless lives. Among other earlier ventures, he was the proud owner of Souvlaki Palace II located on The Ohio State University campus for over 22 years. There, he became an iconic and beloved figure to generations of students, faculty, coaches, athletes, politicians, police officers, and community members. George never turned anyone away – feeding those in need and quietly supporting students who struggled financially through school. He cherished seeing OSU alumni return with their families to reminisce and enjoy his food once again. Often…he could still remember what their favorite menu items were from years earlier.
A lifelong and devoted member of The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, George served on the parish council and dedicated himself to the success of the church kitchen, especially during the annual Greek Festival. His greatest joy was watching the youth of the church grow and thrive. Shortly before his passing, George was honored to learn that he was the oldest living parishioner of the Cathedral. George was rich in heart and a simple man who worked hard, loved deeply, and cared profoundly for family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend to many. He never met a stranger, never turned anyone away, and never forgot those he may have known for only 5 minutes or for a cherished lifetime. His remarkable memory, sharp wit, and generosity of spirit remained with him until the very end.
George is survived by and will be greatly missed by his children, Bill (Jacqueline) Psyhogios; Sophia Psyhogios (Paul Hobart); and Matina (George) Tornick. His grandchildren; Katherine Psyhogios, Stephen Psyhogios (Lexie Loveridge), Dionysia Hobart, Niki and George Tornick. His sister, Konstandina (George) Siavelis; sisters-in-law, Christina Psyhogios and Vikki Strangas; brothers-in-law, Panagiotis Iliopoulos, Ioannis Bouzounis, and Chris Bouzounis; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
