George Rummell Obituary
George Allison Rummell, who passed away on July 12, 2024, was born on September 19, 1934, in Roscoe, Penn., and then spent most of his life in Dover.
George grew up on a farm with his father, Robert Sr. and stepmother Elizabeth, and four brothers: Robert Jr., Regis, Fred, and Raymond (all now deceased).
After graduating from California High School in 1952 and California Teachers College in 1956 (both in California, Penn.), George served in the U.S. Army for several years. He completed his Master's Degree in Guidance Counseling from Villanova University.
George married the love of his life, Dorothy Dobich, in 1957. Well into his 80s, he loved telling strangers that when the two married for better or worse, he couldn't have done any better, and she couldn't have done any worse. Then George would break out into a booming laugh while Dorothy denied that she had made a mistake.
The couple moved to Dover in 1960, where they raised their three children. George started off his career in education as a guidance counselor at Dover High School before becoming the Principal of Adult Education at Kent County Vocational Technical School. He was so proud of the students he worked with, and loved hearing about their successes and families.
George was a proud veteran and a Shriner who spent years volunteering to drive children and their families to the hospital. He loved to travel with Dorothy, and never knew a stranger. He spent the last three decades making friends at the Modern Maturity Center.
George is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 67 years, and their three children: Jeffrey Rummell (spouse: Mary) of Davenport, Fla.; Susan Scott of Dover, Del., and Christian Rummell (Jonathan) of Portland, Ore. He has two grandchildren, Joe Rummell (Sydney) and Allyson Scott, as well as two great-grandchildren.
