George Scherbak Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

George Scherbak, 95, passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2025. Born on September 26, 1930, in Latrobe, he was the son of George and Ann Scherbak.
George was a graduate of Latrobe High School where he took "shop classes" and ran track. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and upon his discharge in 1955, he worked full-time while attending classes part-time at the University of Pittsburgh, successfully completing 80 credits. He retired after 45 years as an expert machinist at Teledyne Vasco.
George was a devout Catholic and a lifelong member of Holy Family Church in Latrobe where he occasionally served as a substitute usher. George was proud of the fact that he was also a licensed pilot and became friends with a group of men who shared his love of flying every Sunday afternoon at the Latrobe Airport for years. He was a regular walker on the Legion Keener Path, even walking five miles daily at the age of 85.
George enjoyed endless hours in his shop. If he couldn't fix it, it couldn't be fixed. There were very few challenges too big or too small that he couldn't accomplish. He loved learning and read the Wall Street Journal daily and was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan - Pitt, Penguins, Pirates, and especially the Steelers.
George is survived by a number of cousins and will be missed by cousins Carol Novosat and, in particular, the Mary Ann (Pat) Conroy Family: Melissa (Chuck), Kelly (Je and Cara (Jorge). One family member described him as "kind and gentle, a Master Repairman." Another o ered, "George was strong-willed and independent, almost to a fault, yet appreciative of favors received." He was especially indebted to neighbors and good friends Bob and Carole Stutzman.
His last days were spent at the Loyalhanna Care Center and Loyalhanna Suites where he was well-liked, and his enduring charm and smile will be missed by the caring sta s at both facilities, as well as the entire compassionate Interim Hospice Team. George was a humble man who lived a simple life "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." (Matthew 5)
Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass at 11 AM on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at Holy Family Church, Latrobe, with the Rev. E. George Saletrik as celebrant.
