It is with deep sorrow yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Minister George H. Scott Jr., who transitioned on January 17, 2026. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, Minister Scott's life was a testament to perseverance, excellence, and an unwavering commitment to justice and community empowerment. Born on August 9, 1962, to George H. Scott Sr. and Helen Scott, George cultivated a foundation for lifelong learning early on at Haskell Elementary. At Roosevelt Middle School, his athletic abilities began to soar as he became a track star, setting record times in the 400-yard dash. His dedication to sports continued at West High School,
where he excelled in both football and track. Renowned for his endurance, discipline, and determination, George was one of the rare athletes capable of playing entire games without rest-a trait that would mirror his tireless work ethic throughout his life. George's pursuit of higher education was marked by intellectual curiosity and distinction. After earning his associate degree from Rock Valley College, he attended
Stillman College, where he majored in Philosophy and Religion. He distinguished himself as the only student in his major and was recognized as a Freeland Scholar for his commitment to intellectual exploration. He continued his studies at the G-More Institute, earning both his Master's and Doctorate degrees, solidifying a lifelong dedication to personal growth and education. Professionally, George devoted 35 years to a distinguished career at Stellantis. He served in management across multiple departments, including Trim, Body-in-White, Paint Repair, Metal Repair, and Trim Repair. His leadership and expertise played a significant role in shaping operations across the plant, earning him the lasting respect of
his colleagues as a skilled and innovative leader. Beyond his professional and academic achievements, Minister Scott was a pillar of the
Rockford, IL community. Serving as the President of the NAACP in Rockford, he led and managed 18 committees dedicated to fighting injustice. His leadership drove significant initiatives, including the organization of the Black History Events at the Historic Coronado, the City-Wide Unity Picnic at Levings Park, and the Race Summit. His commitment to equity was tangible; he actively worked to bring a grocery truck to
underserved areas, established a credit union to empower residents financially, and pushed for the planting of community gardens to ensure access to fresh food for all.
George was a family man at heart. He cherished his earlier union with his first wife, the late Rosalia Day-Scott, and later built a strong and loving foundation with his wife, Angela Scott. A devoted father and grandfather, his legacy of love, resilience, and advocacy continues to inspire his family. George was preceded in death by his parents, George H. Scott Sr. and Helen Scott, and his first wife, Rosalia Day-Scott.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Angela Scott; his children, George H. Scott III, Dejanae, and Isabella; his four grandchildren; his brothers, Jay Macklin, David E. Scott Sr., and Randy (Patricia) Scott Sr.; his sisters, Lia (Anthony) D. Curry and Melissa Scott; special family member, Jasmanee Cook; and a host of relatives, friends, and community members whose lives he touched. Through his dedication to advocacy and community development, Minister George H. Scott Jr. was a driving force for progress, tirelessly working to build a more just and
equitable world. He will be deeply missed.
