George Seamon Obituary
George Richard Seamon 82
February 25, 1942 - July 11, 2024
Celebrating the Life of a Grand Rapids Legend
George Richard Seamon born on February 22, 1942, lit up Grand Rapids with his
infectious spirit until his passing in the early morning hours of July 11, 2024. Known
fondly as "Booga" or "Tooter Booter," he was a true gentleman, scholar, and longtime
resident of Heritage Hill, where he held court as Grandame on Paris Ave from 1988
onward.
George was a local icon-with his big heart, warm voice, and larger-than-life
personality, he brightened every room he entered, never hesitating to share a laugh or
open his home to his friends. George was the type of person that once you knew him,
you instantly felt bad for others that hadn't met him yet! As a "confirmed bachelor",
George lived life on his own terms, forming deep connections and countless lifelong
friendships with whomever he met.
He was a familiar face and friend to many from his days working at the Castle
Restaurant, and adventures at the Carousel bar "Cha-Cha Motor Lounge". In earlier
years George could often be found savoring German delicacies at The Schnitzelbank
with a "Must-y Drink" in hand-George's preferred drink was a Grey Goose or
Belvedere martini, straight up with three Bleu Cheese Stuffed Olives. His instructions
to the bartender were always simple yet exacting: "Open the Vermouth, wave it over
the top- but don't add any!" If the concoction met his standards, he'd declare "Honey,
this drink is 'Musty'!" with a smile and a wink that said, "I must have another!"
George ruled the pool table in his beloved upstairs personal pool hall where his
competitive streak matched his infectious enthusiasm. Beyond being a social magnet
George was a mentor to many, forming a chosen family of men of good character who
looked to him for his impeccable taste and sophisticated charm.
He loved sharing tales of Heritage Hill's history and its architectural marvels, always
ready with an anecdote that could bring the past to life. His love for history, especially
Vienna and his German roots, was evident in his genealogical quests and the many
volumes of world history he consumed.
George was a member of Catholic Central High School class of 1960. He served briefly
in the United States Air Force and later made a career in procurement at the Michigan
Veterans Facility, where he continued his dedication to service. He leaves behind a
legacy of kindness, humor, and loyalty that will be cherished by his surviving family
members and countless friends who will all miss his famous Thanksgiving gravy.
George was preceded in death by his Parents Chester and Nettie Seamon Brothers
Roger and Don and a long line of wire-haired fox terrier companions.
He is survived by his beloved sister Marilyn and cherished nieces and nephews Ann,
Phil, Mary, Jim, Annette, Christine and Lisa.
A celebration of George's larger-than-life spirit will be held on September 6th to honor
his memory, where stories and laughter will fill the air-just as he would have wanted.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grand Rapids community foundation
LGBTQ+ fund.
George's warm wit and laughter echoes through our memories, reminding us to
confidently live a joy filled life.
