George Walter Stewart, 76, left his earthly home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 8, 2025, peacefully in his sleep at his residence.
He was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on September 17, 1948 to the late Rankin and Juanita Stewart. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his step-father, Howard Eldridge; sister, Jean Goins; and son-in-law, Tony Jenkins; brothers-in-law, Jerry Jackson, Harold Gardner, Ernest Tart, Jimmy Tart; and sisters-in-law, Barbara Bell and Helen Tart.
George was a dedicated member of Grace Baptist Church. He was a volunteer firefighter for Ranlo Fire Department, where he was also a founding member. George worked as a maintenance man, electrician, and plumber, since the age of 16. George loved to work on his 1950 Chevrolet truck, which he nicknamed “Ole Dollar”. He also loved to ride the golf cart to get out and meet people because he never met a stranger.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Joyce Tart Stewart; daughters, Lisa Lewis (Mark) and Sandy Jenkins; grandchildren, Miranda Gaston, Wesley Jenkins, Jesse Jenkins, Caitlin Goyette (Chris), Amber Beatty (Vic); and his great-grandchildren, Hunter, Jordan, Alex, Drysten, Trinity, Austin, Josie, Marissa, and Kortney; and his sister, Linda Jackson.
Family and friends will gather for visitation from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2025 at Withers and Whisenant Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Jeff Hicks officiating. Burial will follow at Gaston Memorial Park.
