George Curtis Swartz, age 96 of Bath, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 31, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at Bath Baptist Church, 13527 Webster Rd., Bath, MI 48808. The family will receive friends from 5-8:00 PM on Friday, September 5, 2025 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 203 E. First North St., Laingsburg, MI 48848.
Born on October 13, 1928, in Orlando, Florida, George's life was a reflection of his faith, his love for his family, and his unwavering spirit of generosity.
The son of Orville and Elsie (Hill) Swartz, George grew up with a strong sense of hard work, a love of nature, and servitude to others, which he shared with his five siblings, Ed, Jerry, Flora, Eva, and Helen.
George's heart found its match in Betty Eschtruth, whom he married on May 25, 1968, at Bath Baptist Church. Their union was blessed with over 57 joyous years, marked by laughter and an enduring love that served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Together, they raised a beautiful family, including their children Daniel, Susie, Annie, and Janet. The legacy of George's love continued to grow with the addition of 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy.
A proud graduate of Bath High School, Class of 1947. His patriotic spirit led him to serve his country in the Naval Reserves, an experience that instilled in him a deep sense of duty and honor. George's professional life was equally distinguished; he dedicated 35 years to General Motors as a manager. George's skill and expertise as a master mechanic was highly valued. His passion for sharing knowledge led him to teach automotive classes at Delta College and author automotive manuals, impacting the lives of countless students and professionals.
George's commitment to his faith was unwavering. As a faithful member of Bath Baptist Church, he found strength and solace in his spiritual community. His involvement with Gideons International was a reflection of his desire to spread the word of God and to serve others.
An avid outdoorsman, George relished the time he spent in nature. Whether he was hunting, fishing, or camping, he embraced the beauty of the world around him. His fascination with history was evident in his collection of arrowheads, each piece a silent witness to the stories of the past.
Above all, George was a family man, whose greatest pleasure came from the time he spent with his loved ones, especially his grandchildren.
George is remembered as a man of faith, kindness, and selflessness. His actions spoke of his character, always placing the needs of others before his own. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty; his devoted children, Daniel (Debbie) Swartz, Susie Robinson, Annie Ross, and Janet (Craig) Austin; his cherished 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Eva (Bob) Beckon and Helen Potter; and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; his treasured son, David Swartz; his brothers, Ed and Jerry Swartz; his sister, Flora Savoie, and his former wife, Eileen Alward.
George Curtis Swartz lived a life that was as full as it was long, touching the lives of many and leaving behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and faith.
