George Tweed
Born: July 22, 1938 | Died: July 16, 2025
George Lester Tweed, 86, was welcomed home by his Savior on July 16, 2025. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. Born July 22, 1938, in Asheville, NC, George was the only child of Lester and Ethel Tweed. He was raised in Waterville, NC, where he spent his childhood exploring the outdoors. A passionate fisherman from a young age, George enjoyed fishing with his father at Big Creek and in the National Park, at numerous lakes across North Carolina and Tennessee, and on deep-sea fishing trips with his parents off the coast of Florida. He attended Cosby High School, where he met the love of his life and his wife of 66 years, Charlotte, and later graduated from Warren Wilson in Swannanoa, NC. George was a truck driver for 37 years, driving both regional and cross-country routes. He enjoyed the open road and had the opportunity to travel all across the United States. One of his proudest accomplishments was driving close to four million miles without a single accident-a true testament to his skill and dedication. Following his retirement, George found joy in life's simple pleasures- driving through the mountains with his daughter Phyllis, including many cherished trips to Cataloochee; spending time with his loyal canine companion, Buddy; and being an active and faithful member of Grace Baptist Church, where his faith remained strong and unwavering. Above all, he cherished time with his family, who meant the world to him. Especially dear to him were his grandsons, Brian and Derek. The holidays and their frequent visits to Newport brought him joy, as did his and Charlotte's many trips to Georgia to attend their team sporting events, school functions, church activities, and graduations. George was so proud of the young men they have become, and they loved their Pop unconditionally. Known for his kind heart and generous nature, George never met a stranger. He loved people and made everyone feel welcome. In his later years, one of his greatest joys was sitting on the porch, visiting with anyone who stopped by. He insisted that every guest leave with a snack, a cold drink from the fridge, and often an ice cream. The staff of Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice, delivery drivers, yard maintenance workers, and all others were welcomed with the same hospitality. Whether you were family, friend, or guest, George always made you feel at home. His life was a gift to all who knew him, and his memory will be cherished forever. George was preceded in death by his parents, Lester C. Tweed and Ethel S. Tweed; father and mother-in-law, Charlie A. Pullum and Viola R. Pullum; Brother-in laws, E.B. Hendrix (Greenville, SC) and Jerry Wilder (Newport, TN), and his beloved dog Buddy.
