George "Joe" Howard Wolfe, 89, of Cumberland, died June 6, 2022, at his home.
Born in Cumberland on September 19, 1932, to George Edward Wolfe and Izetta T. Mauk. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his step-father, Presley Mauk; two brothers, Eddie and Richard Wolfe; and a sister, Kay Wolfe.
He was a graduate of Fort Hill High School in the class of 1951. He then attended Frostburg Teachers College for two years. Following school, he worked at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory for 39 years until his retirement.
Joe was most known for his time as a basketball official, rules interpreter, and trainer of officials for over 50 years for the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO), Potomac Valley Board 204. For his time with IAABO, he received in 2005, the 50 Years of Loyalty and Dedicated Service Award.
Joe is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jacquelyn "Sue" Cunningham-Wolfe; two sons, Douglas Wolfe and wife Kelley of Cumberland and Brian Wolfe and girlfriend Kim of Lawrence, KS; grandsons, Jarrett Wolfe and girlfriend Shyann of Cumberland, Grant Wolfe and girlfriend Lexi of Fort Ashby, WV; great-grandson, Wyatt Wolfe of Fort Ashby; brothers, Tim Wolfe and wife Debby of Fort Ashby, Gerald Wolfe and wife Debbie of Cumberland, and Denny and wife Bobbie of Florida; sisters-in-law, Lois Cunningham of Frostburg, Sharon Green and husband Gary of Bozeman, MT; and a large extended family, including numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends and family will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland, on Friday, June 24, 2022, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
A memorial service will immediately follow at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Rob Pierson officiating.
Those wishing make memorial contributions are asked to direct them to the Fort Hill Scholarship Fund, 500 Greenway Ave, Cumberland, MD 21502.
