Gerald Berg Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
Gerald (Jerry) Ray Berg, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, at his home, with his wife Joette and children at his side. He was 80 years old. Born March 29, 1945, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Clifford and Grace Berg, he lived a life marked by faith, service, dedication, and love. After a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer, he left this life as he had lived it-an example of enduring strong to the end.

A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jerry served faithfully in the Lima, Peru Andes Mission, an experience that deeply shaped his love for the gospel and his lifelong desire to serve in any capacity he was called. His time in Peru also gave him a deep love for the Spanish language, which he spoke fluently throughout his life. He diligently studied the scriptures and found joy in sharing his testimony with others.

Education and service were central to his life. He attended the University of Utah and then was accepted into the Washington University dental school in St. Louis, Missouri, where he met Ginny, whom he married in 1973. Together they raised five children: Sandy, Tamara, Annette, Jason, and Ashley. They divorced in 1994. In 2019 he married Joette Stoffel, who survives him.

He was an Eagle Scout-earning the honor in only two years-and carried that spirit of determination throughout his life. A gifted singer, he enjoyed performing with his high school Madrigals, and his love of the arts extended into writing, painting, and sculpting, where his creativity and imagination flourished.

Professionally, he found joy in his career as a dentist, always searching for the latest technologies to improve patient care. He served as the team dentist for the Utah Jazz for 15 years, a role he truly treasured. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army and cherished the friendships he made throughout his life. Known for his warmth and kindness and sense of humor, he had the remarkable ability to become fast friends with nearly everyone he met.

He is survived by his wife, Joette; his children Sandy (Troy) Jones, Tamara (Alex) Fox, Annette (JS) Schmidt, Jason Berg, and Ashley Deegan; 9 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Arnie, and nephews, Chad and Jared.

His legacy of faith, love of the gospel, service, and love for family and friends will live on in all who knew him. His presence will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, October 5, from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 12120 South 1300 West Riverton, UT 84065. A second viewing will take place at the same location on Monday, October 6, from 10:00-10:45 AM with the funeral to follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Redwood Memorial Cemetery. The funeral will be livestreamed via Zoom and can be accessed by clicking the "Watch Services" button above.
