Presque Isle - Gerald Atwood Clark, 90, of
Presque Isle, Maine passed away at a local hospital on Thursday, December 29, 2022, after a short illness. He was surrounded by his loving son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. Gerald was born on April 9, 1932, in Fort Fairfield to Atwood and Mildred Clark.
Gerald grew up on his parents' farm in the Parkhurst Siding area of Presque Isle. He attended a small country school in the area and spoke often of arriving early and starting a fire to warm the building up before other students arrived; a glimpse of his life of public service to come. While growing up on the farm, Gerald was witness to one of two WWII bomber crashes in the area; something he never forgot. In 1950, he was part of the first class to graduate from the newly constructed Presque Isle High School. After graduation, Gerald attended the University of Maine at Orono and graduated in 1955 with a degree in agronomy. While in college he was part of a fraternity where he met several life-long friends. Shortly after graduating, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served honorably for 2 years. Gerald then returned to Presque Isle and decided farming wasn't for him and began his career with the city of Presque Isle. He served as the city tax assessor for many years before becoming city manager and retiring in 1991. Gerald also had a love for real estate and started Clark Realty Company in his spare time. He had two children with is first wife, Beverly; Andrea and Chris. He married his second wife, Carole Anne Brown in 1968 and had his third child, Jeffrey, in 1973. He was a very loving and devoted husband and father. Gerald loved aviation, becoming a private pilot, and joining the local flying club, flying himself and his family around for vacations and on business. When his flying days were over, he continued on with flying R/C airplanes as a member of the Aroostook County Flyers club. He was also a member of the Presque Isle Kiwanis club and served on the board of Aroostook County Savings and Loan for many years.
Retirement was good to Gerald, and he spent much of it on the golf course; his true passion! He and his wife Carole wintered in
Naples, Florida for many years, enjoying sunsets at the beach and visiting friends. Gerald also loved to spend summers at camp with his family and especially his granddaughter Marah. An animal lover in his later years, he had a special place in his heart for his cat Blackie.
Gerald is survived by his son, Jeffrey and his wife Laurie; son, Chris; sister, Barbara Buchanan; granddaughters, Marah, Caitlin, Chelcie, and Kylie; grandson, Eric; and many great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife, Carole Clark; his daughter, Andrea Busick; and brother Vaughn Clark.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the amazing people at Northern Light A.R. Gould and Northern Maine Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Central Aroostook Humane Society, or an animal welfare organization of your choice.
