Gerald Allan Fater, affectionately known as Jer or Gig, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2024, in Carleton, Michigan, at the age of 71. Born on November 17, 1952, in Perue, Indiana, Jer lived a life full of love, adventure, and dedication to his family.
An avid outdoorsman, Gerald had a profound passion for hunting and embraced every moment spent in nature. His love for sports was evident in his enthusiasm for football, baseball, and anything sport-related. Although these interests filled much of his time, nothing brought Gerald more joy than his family, especially his beloved grandchildren.
Gerald was married to his wife Catherine "Cath" Fater for 38 wonderful years, a testament to their enduring love and partnership. He was a devoted father to his children, Mark Fater and Katie Spreeman. His legacy lives on through his five cherished grandchildren: Jayden, Lily, Emersyn, Rylan, and Lennyn, who will always remember him fondly.
Gig had a unique ability to make everyone feel special, often bestowing memorable nicknames upon family and friends. His infectious spirit and warm personality left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Gerald and Lorraine Fater, as well as his siblings Irene, Arlene, and Robert, and his brothers-in-law Jake, Tom, and Paul.
Gerald is survived by his devoted spouse Cath; his children, Mark and Katie; his five grandchildren, Jayden, Lily, Emersyn, Rylan, and Lennyn; and his siblings Clare (Bonnie) Fater, Roberta (Thomas) Holbrook, Peggy (Byron) Claussen, Greg (Maureen) Fater, Mark Fater, Roger (Karen) Fater, Rodney (Vicky) Fater, and Doug (Bethanne) Fater. Also mourning his loss are his mother-in-law Connie Angel Craanen, his sisters-in-law Cathy Fater, Terri Dunne, and Beth Craanen, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Gerald's vibrant spirit and love for his family will be remembered and cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chidren's Hospital of Michigan.
His cremation will take place at "The Witness Crematory" located inside of Michigan Memorial Funeral Home.
