Doc was born May 28, 1937, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Sioux City, the eldest son of Edward and Margaret Gabel. Doc grew up in Kanawha, Iowa, and graduated from Kanawha High School in 1955. He married Margie Wicks in the fall of 1960. He received his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1961, graduating at the top of his class. Doc moved to Emerson, Neb., in the summer of 1961, and helped open the Tri-County Veterinary Clinic at Emerson with the Pender Veterinary Clinic. He then moved to Homer in 1983 where he lived the remainder of his life on the Ponderosa Ranch. In 2005, Doc sold his part of his business and continued to work full time in Sioux City at Tri-State Veterinary Clinic. Doc was passionate about his work and practiced as a veterinarian for over 60 years. He was still working just days before his passing.
Doc enjoyed spending his free time riding his 4-wheeler, checking on the cows, spraying weeds, and planting trees. Doc was an avid fan of Morningside College sports. He was also a third-degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and enjoyed teaching and competing for many years. Doc was the best father and grandpa to his four children, nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his children Brent Gabel of Sioux Falls, S.D., James (Angela) Gabel of South Sioux City, Thomas Gabel of Homer, and Melissa (Kam) Smith of Dakota Dunes; brothers Ronald (Henry) Gabel of Palm Springs, Calif., Richard (Judi) Gabel of Sun City, Ariz., and Robert (Carolyn) Gabel of Indianapolis, Ind.; sister Karen Beck of Glendale, Ariz.; grandchildren Jayme (Mia) Gabel of Jackson, Neb., Colton (Danielle) Gabel of Homer, Jill (Jon) Hansen of Dakota City, Dalton (Alyssa) Gabel of Homer, Morgan Gabel of Homer, Catherine (Shariq) Gabel of Brooklyn, N.Y., Harrison Gabel of Brooklyn, Lindsey Smith of South Sioux City, and Tanner Smith of North Sioux City; and five great-grandchildren Jackson, Jozlyn, Charlie, Olivia and Ella.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Margaret Gabel; wife Margie (Wicks) Gabel; and brother in-law Mike Beck.
Doc was a wonderful man that touched so many people and was a friend to all. Doc, we will miss you!

We have been bringing our pets to Doc for 17 years. And truly feel lost for future care of our fur babies.
Most recently, just last month, our chihuahua, Bud could not stand up and his ever wagging tail sagged. We knew we had to let him go, but anyone reading this will know how truly heartbreaking making that decision is. Both Doc and Linda were so thoughtful and kind. They assured us that if Bud could talk he would be thanking us for making the right decision and easing his pain. We imagine him running and playing and that happy tail just wagging away!!! We will miss seeing Doc's face and feel that the animals and their loved ones have lost a great man.

We have taken our pets to Dr. Gabel for years. He was always so kind and understanding in every situation. I remember when we had to put one of our pets to sleep after 25 years, he could not have been more comforting. Psalm 139:16 All of the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. God knew it was time for Dr. Gabel to come home. He was a good man and will be greatly missed.
Sincerely,
Don Trimble
