Gerald F. "Gunny" Slater Jr.

Gerald F. "Gunny" Slater Jr., 79, a lifelong resident of Poughkeepsie, New York, passed away on January 16, 2026. Born in Poughkeepsie on December 1, 1946, he was the son of the late Gerald F. Sr and the late Thelma Pells Slater.
Gerald was a dedicated serviceman and a cherished member of the community.
On December 28, 2016, Gerald married Jennifer L. Webb.
Gerald proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, retiring as a Recruiter. His commitment to service was reflected in his post-military career as a lineman with New York Telephone, where he also retired. His leadership and dedication to duty were hallmarks of his character both in and out of uniform.
An avid motorcyclist, Gerald founded the Hudson Valley Leatherneck Motorcycle Club, combining his love for riding and his bond with fellow Marines. Woodworking was another passion, allowing him to craft and create with the precision he applied in all areas of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer L. Slater of Poughkeepsie; stepdaughters, Ashley Anderson of Sweden and Kayla Drake of Highland; grandchildren, Micha Anderson and Coralynn Robinson; siblings, Rod Slater, Doug Slater, Vanessa Butler, and Maureen Slater; and many nieces and nephews. Gerald was preceded in death by his son, Gerald F. Slater III, and his brother, Phil Slater.
Calling hours will be from 5 pm to 7 pm on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, New York 12603. A graveside service will follow at 10 am on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded. The Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home is assisting the family during this time. Gerald's legacy of service and love for his community will be remembered by all who knew him.
