Gerald "Jerry" Winters, age 83, of Chesterton, Indiana, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. He was born on June 11, 1942, in Ashland, Pennsylvania, to Wayne and Florence (Kizer) Winters.
Jerry is survived by his three daughters, Kimberly (Marvin Galvez) Winters, Bernadine (Thomas) Davis, Rosalyn (Warren) Gappa; two sons, Greg (Annette) Winters, Kevin (Hilda) Winters; five granddaughters, Jennifer (James) Ibberson, Jessica Davis, Erica Gappa, Katlyn Gappa, Lindsay Gappa; six grandsons, Bryan Davis, Tim (Andrea) Winters, Andrew (Megan) Winters, Mitchell (Allie) Winters, Nicholas (Allison) Winters, Derek Gappa; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Judith (Robert) Webb.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Bonita Mae (Lockey) Winters; his parents, Wayne and Florence Winters; his brothers, Elwood Winters, Ardell Winters; sisters, Bernadine Winters and Diane Kephart.
Jerry worked at Bethlehem Steel for 38 years.Through hard work and dedication, Jerry received several promotions, advancing from General Laborer to Day Turn Coke-Oven Supervisor. He was the highest ranked supervisor that didn't have a college degree. Over his career he received several awards including the honor of pushing the most ovens on a given shift. He went on to work for Home Depot for over 12 years. Jerry loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, bird-watching and spending time with his family. Jerry loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with each one. He loved his pets and loved to tell stories and jokes. Jerry had a generous and giving heart.
Funeral Ceremony will be held at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton, IN 46304. Entombment will follow at Graceland Cemetery, Valparaiso, IN. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 from 10:00 am until the time of service at 12:00 pm at the funeral home.
