Gertrude Buchanan Hurst, 100, of Port Haywood, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at her home. She was born on April 1, 1925, to John Andrew and Texie Victoria Buchanan. Gertrude was a member of St. Paul Comfort Church, the Mathews Women’s Club, and Oriental Chapter No.30, OES. She was the Postmaster at Port Haywood Post Office for many years. She loved reading, crocheting, crossword puzzles, bird watching, and spending time with family and special friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Hurst, and her son, Robert W. Hurst.
Gertrude is survived by her son, William R. Hurst, daughter-in-law, Nancy S. Hurst, granddaughter, Lisa H. Brooks, grandsons, Richard B. Hurst (Susan), Gregory Hurst (Maria) and Jeffery Hurst (Meri), great-grandsons, Joseph Hurst, and Josh Munn, great-granddaughters, Jordan Hurst, Mallory Hurst, Lauren Brooks and Leah Brooks, and great-great granddaughter, Holly Slaughter.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul Comfort Church, Susan, Virginia, with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. in the church. Interment will follow in St. Paul Annex. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul Comfort Church, 5555 New Point Comfort Highway, Susan, Virginia, 23163. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the Riverside-Walter Reed Hospice for their wonderful care given to Gertrude during her illness. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, is assisting the family.
