Gilbert Cyril "Gil" Gerard

Gilbert "Gil" Cyril Gerard, a beloved actor for people of all ages and most notable for his role as Captain William "Buck" Rogers in the 1979–81 television series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 with his wife, Janet, by his side. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on January 23, 1943, he was the son of the late Frank Girard and the late Gladys Caver Gerard.

For a number of years prior to acting, Gil was an industrial chemist, working on fuel oxidizers for rockets. When he decided to pursue his dream of acting, it led him first to New York and then to Los Angeles. His career opened many doors for new experiences, including flying with the Blue Angels and meeting multiple astronauts. Gil even obtained his private pilot license. He enjoyed flying and playing golf when not on screen.

Gil broke bread with thousands of people, including multiple presidents. But his favorite people were his fans. Gil loved going to conventions and meeting people. He would take his time and make sure he spoke to everyone. While Gil loved working as an actor and the opportunities it presented, he truly loved seeing joy in everyone he met. One of his favorite conventions, Dragon Con, held in Atlanta, GA, every year gave him the opportunity to meet many of his fans. During the convention, he hosted a game show to interact with fans. Prizes given to fans included collectables from Gil's personal collection and jewelry crafted by his wife.

Throughout his career, Gil pushed for equal rights for actors of all genders, making it a point that his co-stars were treated fairly. He also encouraged representation for women on screen, so fans could see portrayals of women in strong leadership and positions of power. He also fought for fair wages and contracts, both on the picket lines and in solidarity. Gil believed that everyone should be represented and treated well.

Gil had a philanthropic heart. He contributed to a number of charities over the years, including different women's shelters and The Special Olympics. Until the pandemic, Gil and his family would help local charities in making and delivering meals to homebound residents in the west Georgia area. He also donated several items from his private collection for auctions to benefit many charities in the state of Georgia that support disease research, assistance for the homeless, education, and libraries.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Janet Hand Gerard; his sons, T.J. Gerard and Dane Hand; his cousin, Gilbert Caver; and many extended family, friends, and adoring fans.

In keeping with Gil's belief in taking care of the earth, he will be cremated.
