1954 - 2025
Gilbert "RIP" Lewis, Sr. transitioned to his heavenly home on Thursday, March 6, 2025, while doing what he loved, driving his bus.
Gilbert was born on February 6, 1954, to the union of the late Leo Paul and Elnora Jones Louis in New Orleans, LA. Gilbert was a lifelong resident of Edgard, LA. He was a graduate of Second Ward High School Class of 1975. Gilbert accepted Christ and was baptized at Greater New St. Peter Baptist Church, where he joined and became an active member under the leadership of Pastor Vernon Alexander.
Gilbert dedicated his life to service and hard work. He was employed by the St. John Parish School Board for 45 years, where he became a respected and valued member of the community. In addition to his career, Gilbert served with pride and commitment in the St. John Westside Fire Department for over 30 years, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.
Outside of his work and service, Gilbert found joy in life's simple pleasures. He was an avid fisherman who cherished quiet mornings on the water, and he had a natural talent for gardening that reflected his patient and caring spirit.
Gilbert leaves to cherish his memories, his children Gilbert Jr., Ireyonna, Gerard, and La'Keriyon; companion Brenda, stepdaughter Sheretta, his grandchildren Janaya, Ja'Naria, Ja'Neijza, Dy'Ivry, Derrick Jr., J'Kae, Jeremy, Hayley, Skylar, Legacie, Graison, Lylah; siblings, Wilson (Gloria), Lovenia Ross, Rosetta, James (Francis), Norman, Soloman, Delores (Thomas); and a host of relatives and devoted friends.
Gilbert was proceeded in death by his parents Leo Paul and Elnora Louis, brothers Joseph, Issac, Llyod, sisters Felma, Myrtle, Bertha, Donna Lumar, sisters-in-law Geraldine, Patricia, Mary Lee, and brothers-in-law Walter Lumar and Walter Ross, Jr.
Relatives and friends of the family, Pastors, Officers and Members of New St. Peter Baptist Church, Edgard, LA, New Wine Christian Fellowship and all neighboring Churches, also St. John the Baptist School Board Employees, St. John the Baptist Parish Westside Fire Department, St. John the Baptist Parish Office of Fire Service employees and the Louisiana State Fireman Association are invited to Celebrate the of Life and the Legacy of Gilbert Lewis, Sr. on Saturday, March 22, 2025, 9:30am at New Wine Christian Fellowship, 1929 W. Airline Hwy, Laplace, LA 70068. Rev. Neil Bernard-Host Pastor and Rev. Roland Fiffie, Jr.- Officiating. Visitation 8:00am until service time at the above-named Church. Interment New St. Peter Baptist Cemetery, 200 W. 3rd, Street, LA 70049.
There will also be a visitation on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at New St. Peter Baptist Church, 200 W. 3rd Street, Edgard, LA 70049. Final Arrangements Entrusted to Patrick H.
