Burton Quinn Scott Cremation & Funeral Services Downtown - ErieGilbert O. Lewis, age 83, passed away September 4, 2025 at home. He was born February 17, 1942 in Erie, the son of the late Homer E. and Laura (Walters) Lewis.
Gilbert had served during Vietnam in the US Navy and following his discharge, he had been a welder and grape farmer while living in North East. He later was a bus driver for GECAC and had worked at the former SUNOCO gas station at 10th & Liberty St. Gilbert also took pride in playing Santa Claus for GECAC and the Headstart program’s Christmas celebrations.
An avid NASCAR fan, he followed and rooted for Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and when NASCAR wasn’t racing on the last weekend of July, he put on a famous fish fry using all the fish he caught during the year. Gilbert loved spending time with family and friends and was known for his interesting sense of humor and how he enjoyed making people laugh.
Besides his parents, Gilbert was preceded in death by a son, Scott Lewis; a great-granddaughter Ryliegh; two sisters, Laura Ellan Luce and Elizabeth Hayes; his stepmother, Ruth Lewis and sister-in-law Margaret Lewis.
He is survived by his wife, Rose (Beezub) Lewis; a daughter, Kimberly Halstead and her husband Wayne of Coxs Creek, KY; stepdaughters Ainisa Fletcher and Munikita Fletcher; daughter-in-law Jill Lewis; brother Homer (Bud) Lewis, and sister, Donna Wernicki. Also surviving are many grandchildren, step grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren along with nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Gilbert’s Life on Saturday, October 18, 2025 from 11:00am until 3:00pm at Mound Grove Golf Course, 10760 Donation Rd., Waterford, PA.
