Leora Mae Jones Giewont

Leora Mae Jones Giewont, 96, of Erie, passed away peacefully on Monday September 29, 2025 at Saint Mary's Asbury Ridge. Prior to this current residence, she had resided at Niagara Village for eight years. Leora spent the majority of her life at the family farm in Union City. Leora was born in Cambridge Springs on March 11, 1929 a daughter of the late Olaf and Letitia VanCamp Jones.

She grew up in Cambridge Springs and graduated from Cambridge Springs High School. On June 11, 1949 she married Michael John Giewont. She was employed by the Wattsburg School District for many years until her retirement in 1992. Leora was an avid gardener, baker, and quilter. Her family was her greatest treasure. She had a wonderful circle of sewing friends that she cherished.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Michael John Giewont; two sons, Larry and Phil Giewont; her grandson, Shawn Giewont; one brother, Roa Jones; and one sister, Carol Jones Shreve.

Survivors include her son, Stephen Giewont (Debbie), daughter, Laurie Messmer (Marty), son Richard Giewont (Pam), daughter in law, Kathy Giewont; seven grandchildren, Kevin Giewont (Lindsey) and their children, Emery and Bryce, Amanda Lewis (Aaron "AJ") and their sons, Noah and Levi; Kimberly Bonatti (Chris) and their sons, Lucas and Ben; Michael Messmer (Danielle) and their children, Landon, Nora, and Owen; Sarah Drucker (Zach) and their sons, Ari and Casey; Mo Giewont (Matthew Lahey) and his daughter, Isabelle Lahey; and a granddaughter in law, Julie Fatica, and her sons, Tyler and Eli Giewont; one sister, Janice Thomas, of Meadville; her sister in law, Norma Jones; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Leora's family would like to give special thanks to Diane Vargo for her friendship and assistance through the years. Leora will be remembered for her quiet gentle nature, non-judgemental presence, inner strength, friendliness, listening, graciousness, and helpfulness.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Friday October 3rd from 1 p.m. until the time of services there at 4 p.m. Burial will be private in St. Teresa's Cemetery in Union City.
